Install SavvyCAN on Debian 9 (Stretch)

This article explains how to create your own Internet radio station. To achieve this we'll use Icecast and Mixxx open source programs running on Fedora or Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!OS and other Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux distributions. Download mixxx packages for ALT Linux, Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, FreeBSD, Mageia, NetBSD, OpenMandriva, openSUSE, Slackware, Ubuntu. Another easy way to activate MP3 streaming is to useHomebrew or MacPorts which are package managers like apt on Debian/Ubuntu Linux. They provide a convenient way to install many Open Source packages. Once Homebrew or Macports is installed, adding MP3 support to Mixxx is rather simple. Jul 03, 2013  Mixxx is an open-source disc jockey software available for use in Linux. Mixxx possesses most features of other DJ softwares, such as Virtual DJ, PCDJ etc. In this tutorial, I am going to install Mixxx on Ubuntu 13.04. Mixxx 1.11.0 is supported on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) through to 13.04 (Raring).

First we upgrade to the latest Qt5 package:

sudo apt update

sudo apt upgrade

sudo apt install qtbase5-dev

sudo apt install qt5-default

Download a Qt version (> 5.8) with serialport and serialbus support:

wget http://download.qt.io/official_releases/qt/5.9/5.9.2/qt-opensource-linux-x64-5.9.2.run

Make the downloaded file executable:

chmod +x ./qt-opensource-linux-x64-5.9.2.run

Run the install program either with sudo (if you want to install below /opt) or regular user (to install in your home directory):

sudo ./qt-opensource-linux-x64-5.9.2.run

A new Window will open and press Enter, then fill in your existing Qt account info to start the process. If you don't have a Qt account, you can create one or simply Skip this page. Press Next on the default installation directory /opt/Qt5.9.2 Select component ('Desktop gcc 64-bit') and press Next. Accept the license agreement and press Install and press Finish when done. It takes a while to install all of the files so just wait until it is finished.

Verify the installed version:

/opt/Qt5.9.2/5.9.2/gcc_64/bin/qmake -v

Download the latest branch of SavvyCAN from Github:

git clone https://github.com/collin80/SavvyCAN.git

Change into the new source directory:

cd SavvyCAN

Run the qmake command from the latest downloaded version:

/opt/Qt5.9.2/5.9.2/gcc_64/bin/qmake

A new stash file is created. Now run the 'make' command:

make

If everything works out well it will compile without error.

Debian 9 Download

Ruby 1.8 download mac. Create the install script to install the binaries and create a desktop link:

make install

AND run the install script to actually install it.

./install/yamaha-an1x-virtual-analog-synthesizer.html.

When everything is ok just click on the newly created SavvyCAN link/icon, confirm its an executable and run SavvyCAN

Starting with version 1.9.0, Mixxx directly supports live broadcasting which allows you to connect to Shoutcast and Icecast servers. Using the preferences dialogue, you can simply supply Mixxx with all information needed to establish a server connection. To enable live broadcasting you can either use the options menu or the checkbox within the preference dialogue.

For an Icecast server, you'll need to provide the mount point (of the form “/mount”). You can enter the host as either a host name or an IP address. In the “login” field, the default is to enter “source” – without this, you will not connect successfully to the server. The password will be provided by your streaming server provider, unless you run your own radio server.

Do not enter a URL as the host! “http://example.com:8000” does not work. Use “example.com” in the host field and “8000” in the port field instead.

If you connect to an Shoutcast server the default login name is “admin”. It is not necessary to specify a mount point. The password will be provided by your streaming server provider.

An Icecast server can stream either mp3 or Ogg. However, although Ogg is more efficient and effective - you get a better sound than mp3 at a lower data rate - not all players can play Ogg streams, so as a result mp3 is probably a better choice unless you know your listeners can hear an Ogg stream successfully. You may need the LAME libraries to stream in mp3. See the next section for details.

Debian 9 Stretch

By default, Mixxx broadcasts artist and title information to your listeners. You can disable this feature by selecting “enable custom metadata”. For technical reasons, broadcasting artist and title information is not supported for OGG streams.
